Herbal Therapy- an introduction

Fresh herbs in mortar

"Step back in time to discover the power of herbs…"

The secrets of herbal medicine have been handed down for thousands of years in many different cultures worldwide, and today, over two thirds of the world’s population is believed to rely on herbal remedies for their health and wellbeing. Herbal therapy has a fascinating history, and the overarching principle which is common to most cultures who practise herbal treatments is that they have a holistic approach. For example, herbs are not only applied to diseased or injured parts of the body, but also used for cooking, bathing and even as spiritual symbols of luck and protection.

It is thought that, just like animals, humans learned through experience which herbs were toxic and which could be used for their medicinal qualities. Five thousand years ago in what is now modern day Iraq, the Sumerians were busily drinking herbal tea blended from the finest grown in an expansive herb garden in Babylon! Sumerian herbalists advised their patients to take their herbal medicines early in the morning or last thing at night, just as many of us might do with modern medicines. The Indian tradition of Ayurveda, or "The Science of Life", and Chinese herbal medicine, embody the holistic concept, choosing the right blend of herbs to work on an emotional as well as physical level.  The Egyptians and Romans adored their herbal baths, and this was very much a social ritual. Herbs commonly found in the time of Cleopatra and Caesar are still favourites with us today.

Herbal Therapy today

Modern pharmaceutical developments may mean that we are now more technologically advanced, and some believe that only drugs prescribed by a doctor can help to cure illness and disease. However, if you stop to think for a minute about the ceaseless rush of our complicated lives, and how many people are searching for a way to wind down and relax, it’s clear that there is a real need for us in the developed world to get back to nature and make the most of what the earth can offer us. Whilst there are some conditions which require urgent pharmaceutical treatment, herbal therapy can help to build up long-term resistance to illnesses in general, and should be seen as a great preventative measure rather than just as a cure.

Many herbs contain phytochemicals which doctors now recognise as being key weapons in the war against illnesses including cancer, and which can also act as anti-inflammatories. Several varieties of oregano have been found to produce particularly effective antioxidant effects, protecting the body from developing cancer and heart disease and stimulating the production of protective enzymes. This goes to show that in some cases, the saying, "You are what you eat," has never been more apt. Sufferers of autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's disease may benefit from a holistic programme of integrative medicine, where synthetic medications combine with herbal remedies to reduce the inflammation and other symptoms of the disease. Many modern pharmaceutical products are synthetic versions of herbal treatments – for example, the heart drug, is a synthesised version of digitalis, the active ingredient in foxgloves.

There is growing scientific evidence that the phytochemicals and other chemical properties contained in a wide variety of herbs can boost the ability of the body to fight back against infection and disease, and also that these effects may be achieved through a range of different methods. For example, some herbs may be incorporated into a tincture or tablets to be ingested, whilst others produce their therapeutic effects in the form of oils or creams. Should you wish to use herbs to treat an existing medical condition, you are advised to consult your doctor, as they may react with other medications which you are taking.
