"A clear glowing skin is a sure sign of good health"
What is skin? Your skin is the largest organ in your body, accounting for about 16% of your total body weight and for an average adult has an area of 18,000 square centimetres. It is responsible for maintaining the correct body temperature; it senses heat, cold, contact and pain; it discharges waste material; it helps to maintain the correct levels of water in your body and it protects you from dirt, microbes and chemicals.
The Structure of the skin

The skin consists of two layers
- An outer epidermis, where the process of continual skin renewal occurs
- An inner layer called the dermis.
It is from the base of the epidermis that the new cells are produced. As the cells mature they are pushed up to the surface by the new cells below, on the journey the cells gain a waterproofing protein called keratin.
This journey takes about 14 days in young people and it also takes 14 days to slough the cells off. The inner dermal layer is composed of connective tissue, containing elastin – the fibres which provide stretch and suppleness, and collagen – the fibres that provide strength.
Healthy body healthy skin
A clear glowing skin is a sure sign of good health, so your beauty regime starts not with creams and lotions but with a healthy body.
The phrase ‘you are what you eat’ has been understood for thousands of years. What we eat has a huge effect on our overall health; eat unrefined foods as they maintain their nutritional value, exercise to keep your body fit and improve your overall environment by making a few changes to your living spaces to reduce toxins.
Herbs and your skin
We can boost our skincare by understanding our skin’s need for assistance. We already know how important our skin is to us and how it acts as a barrier to toxins, so use natural products which do not contain more harmful chemicals which add to the problem.
Herbs have been used for centuries as medicines and beauty treatments; they can be taken in many forms from infusions/teas, decoctions, juices, tinctures, tablets powders and essential oils.
The most popular for skincare is in the form of creams and lotions, bath products, balms and wraps which have essential oils or the herbs added. These preparations chosen for the correct skin type and therapeutic benefit can have a huge impact on your skin.
You can make your own preparations at home using ingredients from the kitchen with a few key garden herbs like lavender, a great healing and soothing herb, or calendula (marigold) which has antiseptic, cleansing and detoxifying properties to name just two, but there are many others which can boost your skin balance.
